چکیده

Ba sed on biophysical ice-core data collected in the landfast ice off Barrow, Alaska, USA, in 2002 and 2003, a one-dimensional ice–ocean ecosystem model was developed to determine the factors controlling the bottom-ice algal community. The data and model results revealed a three-stage ice-algal bloom: (1) onset and early slow growth stage before mid-March, when growth is limited by light; (2) fast growth stage with increased light and sufficient nutrients; and (3) decline stage after late May as ice algae are flushed out of the ice bottom. Stages 2 and 3 are either separated by a transition period as in 2002 or directly connected by ice melting as in 2003, when in situ light and nutrient enrichment experiments showed only light limitations. The modeled net primary production of ice algae (NPP) from March to June is 1.2 and 1.7 gCm for 2002 and 2003, respectively, within the range of previous observations. Model sensitivity studies found that overall NPP increased almost proportionally to the initial nutrient concentrations in the water column. A phytoplankton bloom (if it occurs as in 2002) would compete with ice algae for nutrients and lead to reduced NPP. About 45% of the NPP was exported to the shallow benthos.

Physical and biogeochemical properties in landfast sea ice (Barrow, Alaska): Insights on brine and gas dynamics across seasons

[1] The impacts of the seasonal evolution of sea-ice physical properties on ice-ocean biogeochemical exchanges were investigated in landfast ice at Barrow (Alaska) from January through June 2009. Three stages of brine dynamics across the annual cycle have been identified based on brine salinity, brine volume fraction, and porous medium Rayleigh number (Ra). These are sea-ice bottom-layer convec...

Coastal landfast sea ice decay and breakup in northern Alaska: Key processes and seasonal prediction

Seasonal break-up of landfast sea ice consists of movement and irreversible ice detachment in response to winds or oceanic forces in the late stages of ice decay. The break-up process of landfast sea ice in the Chukchi Sea at Barrow, Alaska was analyzed for the years 2000 through 2010, based on local observations of snow and ice conditions, weather records, image sequences obtained from cameras...

How fast is landfast sea ice? A study of the attachment and detachment of nearshore ice at Barrow, Alaska

During the two winters between 2003 and 2005, a land-based marine radar observed the nearshore ice motion during the development and decay of landfast ice near Barrow, Alaska. The radar imagery captured individual events at high temporal resolution, revealing deformation processes and allowing calculation of ice velocity and acceleration. Atmospheric forcing during these events appeared to be i...

Cross-shore hydrographic transects obtained offshore of Barrow with the Remote Environmental Measuring UnitS

Use of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to obtain environmental observations beneath coastal sea ice offshore of Barrow, Alaska is described. The work is motivated by the desire to obtain cross-shore hydrographic transects (temperature, salinity and velocity vs. depth) that would provide estimates of the transport of relatively dense, salty water from the Chukchi Sea to the Arctic Ocean i...

Rapid physically driven inversion of the air–sea ice CO2 flux in the seasonal landfast ice off Barrow, Alaska after onset of surface melt

The air–sea ice CO2 flux was measured over landfast sea ice in the Chukchi Sea, off Barrow, Alaska in late May 2008 with a chamber technique. The ice cover transitioned from a cold early spring to a warm late spring state, with an increase in air temperature and incipient surface melt. During melt, brine salinity and brine dissolved inorganic carbon concentration (DIC) decreased from 67.3 to 18...
